CaroTrans Expands Local Midwest Receiving Station Network

CaroTrans Expands Local Midwest Receiving Station Network

–  Addition of Cincinnati and Indianapolis CFS strengthens commitment to Midwest region –

Clark, New Jersey, December 9, 2014CaroTrans, a leading global NVOCC (non-vessel operating common carrier) and ocean freight consolidator, today announces the addition of Cincinnati and Indianapolis to its Midwest CFS (container freight station) network which is comprised of Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland and Detroit. Local CaroTrans CFS (container freight stations) offer forwarders simplified freight rate processing and greater convenience.  Local market proximity to CFS reduces inland transportation costs and cargo handling for greater cost savings and security. Overall, CaroTrans’ U.S. network includes local teams at 14 U.S. offices and 23 CFS (container freight stations).

Andrew Weisse, CaroTrans branch manager, Chicago, will oversee the Indianapolis receiving station and Maggie Piktel, CaroTrans branch manager, Cleveland will manage the Cincinnati CFS.

“The Cincinnati station gives our customers near this major market the ease of dropping off freight close to their own facility rather than trucking to Chicago.  This expansion is part of our commitment to superior customer service and being close to our customers.  They know they can call and someone will always pick up the phone,” said Maggie Piktel, CaroTrans branch manager, Cleveland.

Andrew Weisse, branch manager, Chicago remarked, “With our new Indianapolis CFS, customers now have a local delivery, same day transport option in the region which simplifies processing and offers a single, end-to-end rate for global shipments.”

Customer Advisory 14-004 Port Congestion Surcharge *Revision*

Port Congestion Surcharge

Dear Valued Customer,

On November 17, 2014, CaroTrans International Inc. (CaroTrans) advised our customers of an amendment to our Port Congestion Surcharge (PCS), issued on May 28, 2014.  In light of recent actions taken by many ocean common carriers, CaroTrans is temporarily waiving the PCS until further notice.

The PCS was implemented in response to the current labor unrest between the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA).  As you know, the labor contract between the parties ended on July 1st, 2014, and has yet to be re-negotiated.  The PCS originally published on May 28, 2014 clearly states that this surcharge was a forward filing, conditioned on “increased port congestion due to potential labor issues.”

As the PCS was published in May 28, 2014, this surcharge complies with Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) requirements that any new rate that results in an increased cost to a shipper may become effective thirty (30) days after publication.  See 46 U.S.C. § 40501(e); 46 CFR § 520.8.  We further note that any changes in rates, charges, rules, regulations or other tariff provisions resulting in a decrease in cost to a shipper may become effective upon publication.  See 46 CFR § 520.8(4).

Again, we appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times.  It is important you understand that container movement, either inbound or outbound, is contingent on paying this surcharge as it is being assessed by the carriers.  We are committed to working with you to help minimize the impact of the current West Coast labor issues.

Please contact your local sales representative if you have any questions.
